How to become a Benedictine monk?
Men who are interested in joining a monastery can apply to the monastery of their choice to live with the monastic community for a certain time (postulate). Together with the candidate the monastic community then considers the authenticity of his vocation to be a monk and his motivation.
If the community supports his appeal to join and the chapter agrees, the one-year novice period begins. During this time the novice gets accustomed to the rule of Benedict. Together with the community he can take his time to further clarify his vocation.
At the end of this year the monk takes his "temporary vows" and after another period of three years his "perpetual vows" with which the monk affiliates himself with the monastery for life, he will only work in the interests of that specific monastery.
