Library and Museum – treasures of the past and present
Admont Monastery houses the largest monastical library in the world. But it is not only its spatial dimensions that are impressive - the library is also the showcase for a valuable collection of books and a wealth of artistic masterworks (sculptures, reliefs and frescos).
Equally worth seeing is the new large scale museum at the monastery, with its 3600 square metres of exhibition space, in which can be viewed art and natural history collections, including a Museum of Contemporary Art (with special “Made for Admont” works), a multimedia monastery presentation and much more. All these are combined into a harmonious whole that generates fascinating cross-references. Admont Museum has been awarded the Austrian Museum Prize and, with the library, attracts some 80,000 visitors annually. All the rooms in the museum environment area are fully wheelchair- and baby buggy- accessible.
