Restoration of the library - project of the century finished!
In the course of this “project of the century” - comparable work has not been done since the completion of the library room!
All stone (floor, pillars) and metal (railings) components, the ceiling frescoes, all the sculptural decorations, all wooden parts (bookcases, windows) and last but not least all the books (ca. 23,000 volumes!) in the North and South side rooms were worked on in the years 2004 and 2005 and so, almost completely restored, can now be admired by visitors. The demanding central hall has been restored in 2008 in the final phase.
Seven teams of restorers from the most varied fields (paper, murals, wood, metal, stucco, stone) were working on two major projects: on the one hand, restoring the books coordinated by Dr. Gerald Unterberger and on the other, the restoration of the fabric of the building, which has been managed by the monastery builder DI Lambert Gahbauer. The following teams of restorers were employed in the restoration work in the period 2004 to 2008:
- Stonework: floors, pillars:
Messrs Zottmann GmbH, Judendorf
- Metalwork: railings, various metal connections:
Elisabeth Krebs, Vienna
- Figural ceiling paintings, frescoes:
Hubert Schwarz, Graz
- Monocrome sculptures by Josef Stammel:
Eva Moser-Seiberl, Bad Aussee
- Windows and polycrome installations:
Markus Piffl, Graz
- Metal frames - gilding:
Bernadette Künigl, Lannach
- Books:
Bettina-Dräxler, Vienna
The total restoration costs were about 6 million euros - the EU, the State and the Province of Styria were supporting this project; nevertheless 1.4 million euros has been founded the Monastery.
