We have passed through fire and water
and Thou hast brought us out into a refreshment
This is the fiery motto of this year’s exhibition in the Manuscript Room.
The passage from Psalm 66 of the Old Testament represents the underlying, shared theme of the exhibits on display. Costly handwritten, elaborately illuminated texts make reference to two of the fundamental aspects of human life: fire and water. God brings us into a refreshment – water, which heals and brings salvation, takes its theological form in the Sacrament of Baptism and the resultant mission of us Christians that is manifest in our enrichment through the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation, emulating the way that the Spirit of God descended upon the Apostles like “tongues of fire”.
These theological aspects of the exhibition are supplemented by representations of fire- and water-related events in the Holy Scriptures and the history of the church.
